Here are a few tips that I use to get better pictures of kids at this awkward age.

1) Shoot them in their natural environment.

Elijah has no problem with me setting up a light stand with off camera flash right over his head, especially when we use it to make some spotlights for his wrestlers. I showed him how we can use a colored gel and a honeycomb modifier to make a really neat spotlight effect to highlight his action figures. He loved it. Of course I am now recruited to take head shots of all 50 of his action figures next week, just in time for his imaginary draft. (At 8, age it was imaginary, but now that he is 10 we call it “storyline.”)

2) Make them comfortable

Best way to do this? Silly jokes. I confess, with my own kids I often resort to potty humor. I would never do this with your children, because I don’t know how you feel about that. Instead, I would ask them to tell me a silly story, or I would make a clown out of myself. Picture of laughter aren’t always frameable, but the moment right after, when the head is relaxed and the eyes are still twinkling, now that is a pretty moment.

We had a very low tech vacation at Pinchot Park this year. We practically lived there all summer, but we had paid for a weekend when it was still winter and we knew we’d need a break. The weekend we’d chosen was the fourth of July weekend. Normally this is one of the busier weekends at the park, but this eyar it happened to be one of the hottest spans of the summer, crusing up above 100 degrees farenheit. We sweated our butts off and lived in the lake. We also attended a geology seminar and a church service at the gorgeous amphitheatre that graces the park. It was a wonderful vacation.

These are the gorgeous images I was able to take around our neighborhood this summer with my beloved Konica FC-1 my husband bought for me last year. I am in love with these pictures – they are so much warmer and have so much character than some (not all) digital images.
